my '69 427/435 4-spd has been working great. All of a sudden, I can't shift. The clutch seems to work because I push it in and can start the ignition, and with the clutch pedal depressed I can roll the car.
But the shifter won't go into gear, not R or 1-4. It's weird. Where the shifter is currently set, I can ease the car forward (that's how I got it back in the garage) so it must be stuck in like 2nd. Linkage problem?
Your linkage is most likely jammed up with the shifter in neutral and one of the forward gears engaged. Get under the car and move the "ears" on the side of the transmission to the middle position. Don't change the reverse ear, since you were able to move it forward, that one is already disengaged.
Factory shifter? Might be time to rebuild it. Or replace it. Age and wear on the shifter arms, or maybe as simple as time to replace the bushings on the shift rods.

I think you are right. I can't get up under there though. I don't have a lift. I tried but there's just no way for me to get in there (under car exhaust, too). I was thinking about putting up on a curb, but the street's wet from earlier rain. I may just have to wait for my mechanic to get out here.
It moves forward OK (feels like stuck in 2nd) but won't shift into anything else. Just have to push in the clutch and physically push it backward.
What a drag, but better the linkage than the tranny!
