My starter is toast, it's a cheap o'reilly rebuilt and I want to change to something I won't need to replace again. I have a couple of questions:
The starter on it now has offset bolts, but most of the starters I found on summit don't, yet they are listed as compatible with my application. Can I use offset or inline?
I'm looking at this starter , but after reading some other threads I'm worried about the wiring on the solenoid being different, has anyone used this starter? Also, how do I know which ring gear I have? I'm guessing it's 168 tooth, but I'm not sure. If it isn't, does that mean I need a different starter, or is the pinion the same for the 153 and 168 tooth?
If your starter has a staggard bolt setup you have a 168 tooth starter which is correct for a 71 manual. That starter is way more than you need for your application. There are others that are less expensive that will turn your motor over just fine. Yes the wiring is a little different but it can be done. The starter I have in mine was about 150 and it turns over my motor just fine and it is right at 11 to 1 compression.
Thanks for the reply Gordon, so do I need to buy a starter that has the staggered bolt holes? Or can I use either style?
One person recommended this starter, but it was based on things he heard from other people, others on the forum recommended an OE mini starter, which costs almost as much as the summit, is less powerful and has straight mounting holes.
This looks the easiest to install, but it's even more expensive than the summit.
I had a GM mini starter on mine for years and it worked very well. It was not cheap but it did work. It looks like the last one you show there with the staggard holes. That will work, but it is expensive. Thestraight across bolt hole starters will work with the 168 tooth starters you just have to use the correct mounting holes. Since I went to a T56 transmission the GM starter did not work. I now have a straight across style starter similar to the ones you posted. I also have a good starter that I got from a motor that I purchased. It is brand new still in the box tha twould work with your motor. Let me dig up the specs on it. I'll send a link to the starter when I find it. I'll make you a pretty good deal on it if you would like it.
Here is the link to the starter I have http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-9100/
As you can see there are 4 holes for mounting the starter. You just use the correct 2 for the bigger flywheel.
Let me know what you want for it shipped to 98052, does the solenoid have the same posts as the OE style? I guess it's not a big deal if it doesn't, I'm just not electrically inclined and like simple. Let me know about the shipping.
