Default information from Richmond Gear

For those of you who where wondering about swapping the gears in your vette here's what I was told from Richmond. I was confused by the aside that they put on their web site saying that you would have to switch to a 4-series carrier for a 4.10 or higher when swapping the gears in your vette. I called Jegs, and they gave me the response that if I swap to any different gear ratio I would have to change carriers. Richmond has stated in an email to me that we DON'T have to switch carrier's if we are swapping up to a 3.73 gear. Anything higher and we do. Just some info for the confused people like me out there. :D

hrm...interesting...thanks,

I thought we could go up to 3.90 in the 3-series carrier...
and that 4.11 is start of the 4-series....
and that a 3.90 can be in a 4-series carrier but using a spacer ?
or was this only with GM gears.....that you can do this....

was I all

You can put a 4 series gear on a 3 series carrier with a spacer (not recomended personal experience). You cannot put a 3 series gear on a 4 series carrier. Not sure on the 3.90 gear. Smokedtires can help on this. The 3.08 to 3.70 gears will all fit on a 3 series carrier. There is someone making a thick 4.11 gear that will fit a 3 series carrier without a spacer. I think Toms has this set available.

ylose,
3.9 and lower (bigger number) can be used on a 3-series case with a spacer but i would NEVER do it. The correct way is to use a 4-series case. And believe it or not i have a ring gear spacer i`m NOT trying to sell!! Unless someone really wants it, CHEAP ...redvetracr

For the 63(?)-79 Corvettes, we can go up to a 3.90 gear ratio with a 3 series posi. I know this because I have a 3.90 that I used in my old posi (3 series) & now my new Tom's posi that installed without any problems. On a side note, Tom's 30 spline posi only comes in a 3 series if your in the market.

That's correct, but I'd suggest an overdrive instead of the 3.55 anyhow ;) .
