Default Cam question

I am looking at a cam for sale on the forum and wanted to get the opinion of some cam experts. I am very new to this so any advice would be greatly appreciated. So here's what I have and want to do. I have a 75 that will get rebuilt soon. I want to wake the motor up from its dismal 165hp to somewhere in the 300-350hp range. I plan to put on new heads, intake and finish dual exhaust (already has headers). I'll have the qjet rebuilt for the set up. So, the question is, would this cam be good for my application or would it be too much?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Bryan

You don't have the compression (figure a floor of 10:1) to pull it off. None of the other parts matter for this cam if you're not going to bump the squeeze.

Competiton Cams has a free download to help you select the correct cam.

You need to state at least engine & trans. Not enough compression for that cam.

Thanks for the replies. I learn a little more everyday and was thinking that the cam wouldn't be right. I'm going to download the CompCams program when I get home from work. That will help a lot I'm sure. Thanks again.

I like CompCams, but wouldn't make a final decision based solely on CamQuest. There's more to it than this, but do give some thought to getting your theoretical DCR in the right zone, allowing more margin the bigger the cam...

Don't buy a cam & then try to fit a motor around it. That CC cam has way too much duration (236) for low-comp street motor.

Assuming that's a low-compression 75 L48 ... once you get past the arguments of HOW hp was&is measured & rated ... you can also figure that 165fwhp equates to about 250fwhp when compared to today's crate motor published ratings.

So, when tuned right, figure you have a 250fwhp floor & need find about 50-100 more. In reality, you can draw nearly direct Performance comparison from any fresh OE L48 to todays GM Universal Goodwrench crate p/n 10067353 ... both 350s share virtually same low compression, heads & cam.

You can rebuild yours w/ flattops, your heads, shim gaskets & an inexpensive summit camlifter kit K1103 & it'll make just over 300 flywheel hp on pump gas ... cheap & easy.

flattops'll put it at about 9:1 ... sealedpower small popup H618CP about 9 3/4:1.
