Check with Jegs or Summit, they usually are pretty close in price. The real cam gurus have told me in the past that the 268h is a pretty good cam, but the XE line is a little more modern cam and probably will give more performance. Choosing a cam is something that you have to do very carefully, a lot of it depends on what type of driving you are going to do, it also matters which transmission you have if you have a 4 speed manual then you can get away with a little more cam than you can with an automatic and a stock torque convertor. Your rear gears also matter, if you have a 3.08 rearend, a cam that makes its power at higher rpms won't give you the performance that you'll want.
My car had a Crane cams blueprint series cam, it made its best power at 3000 rpms and above. It was a real dog to drive with a stock torque convertor and 3.08 rearend.
I have gone to a Comp Cams XE262, and I'm afraid this is a little radical for my setup. The only reason I chose it is that I have a set of 3.55 gears and a TH-200-4r transmission that I intend to install if the performance is still too loggy for me (I'm going to install them anyway, but I'll also put in a 2200-2400 rpm torque convertor.)
Good luck on which ever cam you decide to buy.
I'll be running an XE-262-H. CompCams said I won't need a taller stall. But, a 3.36-3.55 rear would REALLY REALLY help the "out of the hole" performance. The good thing about the XE-262-H is, you can run up to 5600RPM, but also kick some butt from idle up...
Jegs is a good place. Make sure you get the Cam, Lifter, Springs and timing chain kit. That will insure that nothing will mess up, and everything will be matched to the cam.
I'm surprised you have to still subject yourself and the Vette to the tests. My car, being a "Collector" car, and now nearly 25 years old, is exempt. This allows me to run diesel when I want. :D
I KNOW! :mad these tests are bogus! Its wrecking everything. I have true dual exhaust on now, and I have to figure out how to wedge two cats in there, or buy a used exhaust and then put my dual exhaut back on! This really wrecks my car budget since I have no $ to begin with. and my 93 caprice just failed emmisions so I have to cough up cash there for a cat. The o'zone hole was already there! this is all a conspirecy!!!.
I've been hearing that some states have been cutting off some years, and that 77's dont need testing. Will Illinois do anything like this soon. I can only hope.
Here in Massachusetts '83's and older don't have to pass emmissions :yesnod: . I m putting on headers and an x-pipe with no cats this summer :yesnod: :D
My previous Vette was a '73 L-48, Q-Jet, No Headers, 3:08 gears, but True
Dual 2 1/4 exhaust with H crossover pipe, Turbo 400 Auto, and CC 268 HE
Cam. It had good bottom end torque and decent mid-range. I then purchased a TCI " Saturday Night Special " Torque Converter and began "Pounding" Big Blocks out of the Hole!!! "Of course, most of them caught me in the 1/8th mile, but some didn't because of my Holeshot. ( Almost forgot, I also purchased 1.52 Magnum Roller Rockers and CC Lifters.)
I have nothing but praise for the 268H cam if " Bottom End Torque" is your thing. LATER, GENE :seeya :seeya :seeya
I built a comp 268 cammed engine for my 73 four years ago and liked how the cam performed. I used all Comp Cam components (lifters, springs, roller rockers, push rods) and up to this date they have performed well . The engine has a LT-1 intake with a holley 600 also a good set of heads. Forged pistons might be over kill for the street but my sixties mentality forced me to put them in when I bult the engine anyway. Headers and chambered ehaust round out the package and up to now I have been pleased how the engine has performed. The cam has a noticeable lope at idle which I like, it makes a Vette sound like it's supposed to. An earlier post said it has good bottom and midrange power, I have found that to be true and this seems to suit my 3:36 gears. Lately I have been thinking about installing a CC270H cam, I think my engine has a little more left in with the 9to1 pistons utilizing this cam. In my opinion use either the 268 or 270 if emmisions aren't a consideration in your state. Good Luck.
