ZZ4 aka L98 head gm p/n 12556463

perhaps you have sealed power H670 piston

stock uncut deck & gm headgasket 10105117 (5.8cc , 0.028") it'll make between 9.8 & 9.9:1 scr depending on which bore oversize. & that head'll flow all that cam & then some will offer. Will gain at least one-and-a-half whole points of comp over 882s. ZZ4-L98 heads'll make a very noticeable difference here ... recommend em when they're at a bargain.

MakoShark72 might have a low mile set. He just pulled his ZZ4 heads and replaced them with AFR's. PM him

Take this comment coming from an autocrosser trying to stay legal for NCCC class 2D (must be stock heads, but can update/backdate within class). From what I understand, the best stock heads for a L-48 are the 1971 330hp #3973487. This is what I have on both of my vettes. I don't know what aftermarket heads out there that are better than those (i'm sure there are some).

I found a pair of 487 heads on ebay for about $70. Took them to a local shop and had them cleaned up and a valve job done for another $150. They went onto my 76 and made quite a difference. I know those will work with your headers since I have the hooker side pipes on my 73.

Other than weight reduction, what advantages (if any) do the L98 aluminum heads have over the L31 vortec heads? If he's on a budget wouldn't the vortecs be the best "bang for the buck" so to say?

Actually the AFR's are going on the ZZ383. I'm leaving the ZZ4 motor intact.

I will have the aluminum Vortec Fastburn heads, hotcam, rocker assembly, and an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap for sale, all brand new.

budget contraints? vortecs require a new vortec intake manifold ... L98-zz4 do not.

FYI ... 3973487 head casting ... 487 is also OE on 71 L48 ... I've had 2 71 survivors ... have 1 now ... have a spare date match pair 487 as backup ... frankly, I don't see 487 as any better flowing or making better power than other 70s-80's 76cc heads ... but they're good thick tough castings & can benefit from good valve job-cleanup ... but any other head can too.

take that from a circletracker whose regional rules require iron production heads no less than 70cc and NO porting period and NO more than 3 angles total ... we've tried just about every ~76cc casting number & their performance is essentially all the same ... by try I mean flow bench, dyno & race ... all 3. FYI ... as those heads have become harder to find, regional rules are allowing a World Products service replacement type head & it Does perform a bit better than most. It's NOT a s2 nor srtorquer ... it's a service replacement grade head ie OE clone. All of em get milled/cut from about 76cc to 70cc.

hommer ... you & others should list an approximate geographic locale in your profile so we can see about where you're at.

My engine builder Used my 882 heads and reworked them. We made 340 HP and 390 tq with them. The rest is 9.5-1 comp, dual pattern cam. 2701 intake and 1406 carb.

Do you know anybody in your area that builds performance motors, they should know how to rework a set of heads.

I have a pair of 3973487 heads on my '72 right now. I'll pull them off today and trade anyone right now for a set of ZZ4 / L98 or Vortec heads.
