Rear End Chatter

I have a 77 with a 350 turbo automatic and the stock differential. Something in the rear end suddenly developed a clatter. It claters in cadence with the rotation of the tires. Going slow (in any gear or in neutral) it clicks slowly. Going fast it sounds like a threshing machine. It doesn't seem to make the noise when I first start out. It kicks in after a few blocks of driving.

I've had the rear wheels off and found no signs of rubbing. We just took the engine down to the head gaskets and reassembled it, but didn't touch anything in the rear.

Any ideas?

Hope that it's a universal joint. Because past that it's a rear wheel bearing, or something in the pumpkin.

Does your e-brake work? I'm willing to bet the hardware rusted, broke and set the shoes loose inside your rotors. Happened to me. I initially thought it was the diff.
