Ok, maybe not exactly 50hp - but pretty darn close ! :D
...changed the springs on my distributer (vacuum advance quit working) and boy what a difference !
Left 2 black marks the length of my car on take-off last night at 9pm cst.
Roar - 2nd gear, roar - 3rd gear ....whoa 60mph already on a 30mph road.....slow down boy....who-a-a-a-a - kinda scary in an C3 with the top down and nuttin' but a lap belt holdin' me in..... more fun that my C5 :chevy :chevy :chevy :chevy :chevy :chevy :chevy

I Love It.
I know what you mean about playing with the timing. I always tinker with it and I think I have found the perfect Spring/initial/vacuum advance combo. Just last night also my Brothers son asked me to do a burnout and I left 30' dual marks down the street............I could have gone further but got out of it. Got to love it
I used the 'silver' springs from the re-curve kit.... (supplied w/my new distributor - but it has no tach drive :( )
There were (3) sets of perf. springs plus the 'stock' springs on the dist. I used the 'middle' of the road in weight (2800rpm)- next to the 'weakest' pair....
The ones on my car (that came off) were strong enough to not be called springs ! ...they could hold up a refrigerator door !
Hmmm.... base-advance-vacuum,
Well, I was borrowing a friend's timing light to begin with.... that's when we found out the vacuum was a big fat '0'.....
Previous 8-degrees / 22-degrees / 0-degrees Now 8-degrees / 38 to 40+ degrees ? / 0-degrees
I now have 'full' mechanical advance & ditched the vacuum (unplugged) :D
Remember, I'm still running points. (Damn, those parts are getting harder to find - shelf space is being taken up by Tuner Imports ! :mad )
Thanks! Much appreciated. Here is a spare #1103291 HEI correct for my 1979 L-82. Bit of a winter basement project. All is new including a Moroso spring and weight kit. The Moroso instructions give some clue as to what to expect with each spring strength set (there are three) and at what rpm. Unfortunately they do not say which colour spring is what!! So I have copper, silver and black. I have put on the silver. Does anyone know which is which? I am looking for low-end torque.
Hmmm.... sounds like the kit I used...(black, silver, copper)
-Close enough but mine were gold in lieu of copper.
The lightest/weakest springs should be the copper - for light, high-horsepower cars.
I used silver, since I'm running a big block and my torque/hp curves peak sooner than your L-82. Try the copper ones & if it 'pings' a lot, then your too far advanced and can put the silver ones on. I may be wrong, but you can't create torque you don't have - but you can take advantage of your 'torque' curve and set it up for that RPM. Bend each tab of the spring & you'll notice the difference in the 'amount of pull'

That's what it's all about! I want a ZZ4!!!!! :cry
Lars has the timing kits too. He's been preaching them for quite awhile. I can attest, as you have, as to the difference it makes when you bring full timing in early enough in the curve.
BTW, vacuum advance will help a little with throttle response and gas mileage. You should be at 50-52 degrees total timing with vacuum advance hooked up. You're in the right area for mechanical though.
