So today I spoke with the technical department at Old Air Products in regard to using the new Pro6ten compressor and R134 refigerant and they recommend using their VIR eliminator kit. Does anyone have experience with the VIR eliminator and how difficult was the install. According to Old Air all the factory lines will fit. I would appreciate any feedback.
I put in a VIR eliminator kit when I went to R134. I'm not real happy with it mainly because I'm still using the A6 stock compressor. The A6 creates quite a drag and each time the system cycles on and off it's like someone put on the brakes. And the system isn't any colder than when I started.
My final thoughts on C3 AC systems is this. If you want to keep the car stock then get the original system working as well as you can. It will work but not all that great with the new refridgerants. If you don't mind going non-stock then replace the whole POS with a modern setup like Vintage Air. I'm on my third compressor, I've taken the system apart completely and rebuilt it and I'm still not happy with the mediocre air flow nor the temperatures. For what I've spent I could have paid for a Vintage Air and then some. JMHO.

I'm in agreement here. You will never get the cooling you want with 134 and a stock system. I spent to much on mine but not as much as a whole system. You need to go to a '78 and up accumulator system with a Sanden type compressor and a new crossflow condensor. I also added electric fans to improve airflow. Then I changed the blower fan for a C4 type. It can be done for less than $600 but you need some a/c experience to do it. That's about half the price of any kit. Search for my old posts on this where I give more detail. PM me if you need more help.
The compressor he wants to install is a modern replacement for the A6 that unlike the A6 has very little drag. Since the drag is now significantly reduced the cycling system may now make sense, no more 5hp drag on the engine from the compressor when it kicks in. His question is, how difficult it is to install the VIR eliminator kit?

Thanks TopGunn, My thoughts are with the new Pro6ten compressor and the VIR eliminator kit I should have a system that performs pretty good with the R135 refigerant. It has been recommended that I also change the condenser to a cross flow or parallel flow I forget which. Supposedly this will increase the efficiency of the system significantly.

I'm not all that knowledgeable about these systems but it always baffles me why they can't be made to blow ice cold air like a modern car if you change out the condenser and the compressor to modern technology. My Dodge truck had a tiny compressor and smaller condensor than the Vette and it would freeze me out on a hot day. Maybe the person giving you these tips has the secret, I'll be interested in the results.
You might want to change out the fan motor to the C4 type to get more airflow. There's a bunch of threads on it.
I am told that a parallel flow condenser is necessary, especially with R134, to allow it to better shed the heat it picked up. I was further told that the bigger the better on the condenser.
I installed a 15.5"x 29.5" (overall) parallel flow. It cost approx $110 from Nostalgic Air and I was able to mount it to the stock (73 to 82) upright mounts that heks the stock condenser using slightly modified galvanized z channel flashing (Lowes/Home Depot). A great (and inexpensive) upgrade from stock replacement.
So...........gr8t73...........How did you make out with all this? Now that the hot weather is here, did you install the Pro6ten compressor and the VIR eliminator kit??
