Spark Plugs..
Chemistry: Platinum is a catalyst which causes Hydrogen molecules and Oxygen molecules to spontaneously combust...without heat and the platinum is 100% recovered...it's the only element which does this. Lots of Hydrogen and Oxygen molecules become present in the combustion chamber after the spark occurs, so platinum assists in complete combustion.
Personal Experience: I had a Pinto once with an engine which was so bad that I could not get it up to 55 miles per hour (it was back when that was the fed limit) until well after I was on the freeway. I replaced the spark plugs with Bosche Platinum and I was able to get it going 70mph without any sweat. After another year I decided to rebuild the engine and found one exhaust valve had 1/4 of it completely missing and another exhaust valve had a smaller crack with only like 1/16 missing but totally warped.
Do platinum plugs make a difference?

If the car originally came with exotic spark plugs, then you replace them with exotic plugs. If the car originally came with standard type spark plugs, that's what you replace them with...otherwise you're wasting money and not getting any increased performance. As long as the ignition system is in good shape, the compression is good, all you need is the correct heat range application of your favorite brand spark plug. If you have oil burning issues or some other problem, some other application or design might be of help, but it's simply a bandaid when a true repair is called for.
