Default 80 underhood light ???

My car had no underhood light when I got it. My hood has 2 holes for the light but no threads. Can someone descibe what type fastener to use. What was there from the factory? A photo would be great. I have had an aftermarket light for quite some time now, but haven`t put it on. I want a factory look. Thanks in advance.

I've seen in the vendor catalogs and even in the AIM where they show threaded inserts.
But all four of mine, 78/79s, are simply screwed into the fiberglass.

My '80 used to have rubber grommet looking things inserted into the holes you're talking about. I'm pretty sure that they were factory installed. Being that they were made of a rubber material they have since been gone. I would also like to know how to affix the light to the hood and have a clean look.

Here's a photo of my underhood light. I installed a small toggle switch in the fender well to turn the light off when I have the hood open for a prolonged period of time.

I was positive they were factory installed with pop rivets. Maybe I am on crack.

My 82 has small phillips head sheet metal screws. Now if I could just find the switch that turns it on and off when the hood is opened???

The switch is in the light itself. It is a mercury switch as I recall, the light knows what posititon the hood is in and it turns on or off accordingly. They are notorious for failing, thus many splice a real switch in the circuit.

I believe what you are looking for is called well nuts. They are a rubber coated nut with internal threads. Put the well nut into the opening on your hood, insert screw and tighten down. As you screw into the threads, the rubber expands and gives you a tight fit. I purchased mine from a hardware store and they work great. I want to say I got 1/2" well nuts but that was years ago. Just measure the opening of the hole on the hood and get the appropriate size.

When I removed mine, the well nuts wouldn't work to renistall them, so I wound up using the square inserts you get from the parts store to fit on a liscence plate bracket, that you would screw liscence plate screws into. They are in the HELP section of parts. They are hidden by the lamp and I was able to use factory type screws, so you wouldn't know it was mounted any different than factory.

On my 80 it's held in with 2 screws. I have no idea if that's the original way it was attached but it's been that way since before I got the car.

THANKS! That baffled the $hit out of me. I guess that explains why the bulb was removed.

I was surprised to see that the switch is for sale by itself for about 13 bucks.

Found a whole page of well nuts at: http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Nuts_Well_s/138.htm

Am I to assume an '82 would have standard fasteners, not metric? If so the largest screw that goes through the light is 8-32 and the holes in the hood are about 5/16". So that would be the forth one down on the right?

My 81 has that exact setup. I was able to get replacements rubber grommets with a brass threaded insert at ACE hardware for a buck.
