i was bleeding the brakes today and noticed something concerning when putting the wheels back on. I decided to check for play, and found no movement in the 9 and 3 position whatsoever. But in the 12 position there is 1/4 inch, maybe more movement
what is causing this?
Also i do not know if this is normal, but there is some gear lube weeping out on the half shafts.
My '77 had about the same movement. I could see the whole trailing arm move. After getting everything out there was about .100in. in and out play on stub axels. I was told that this is caused mostly by wear to the clutches in the diff. The bushings in the trailing arm and strut rods were worn causing most of my 12 and 6 movement. I am concerned by the fluid leak as this is what led me to do all this work. Mine was pinion seal but has resulted in complete rear suspension rebuild. I hope you have better luck. I am starting to believe the diff. and rear wheel bearings are these cars biggest weakness. mds...

First - Redo the test with a buddy moving the tire @ 12-6 while you have your head under the car - look to see if all the movement it the side yoke at the diff. 1/4" or more is way too much at this location. however it may be a number of things all stacking up to that as well. You can have worn bushings in the lower struts and worn trailing arm bushings as well all of which could stack up on you.
The 9-3 lack of movement would indicate that the wheel bearings are still in good shape however keep in mind that they wear generally in the 12-6 direction.
The lube weeping out onto the half shaft would indicate worn seals which often goes hand in hand with worn side yokes.
heres what mine looked like: Notice the mushroomed tips of both yokes
