gonna set this timing myself today and see if I can t pass the NOX emissions test. I know my timing is advanced and this may be my problem.
Question - when I hook up the light can I just hook the red to battery positive , black to battery negative and the green to spark plug wire #1.??
I already unhooked the 4 wire connector at the distributor.......
is that all there is...
BTW, with the car stopped the mark on the dampner is lining up with
10 degrees BTC......
Red goes to power -- you can use the power off the back of the alternator
Black goes to ground - any ground is fine or you can use the alternator bracket
The little green clamp goes on the + side of the coil if you're checking dwell. You don't need this with HEI distirbutor.
There should be a big, black plastic clamp with a square hole in the middle. THAT goes on the #1 wire. Also -- make sure you pull that wire away from the others so you don't get feedback.
by the way....for those who dont know , I failed the NOX test at emissions
and was looking at the timing ( possibly advanced )
as the problem.
I know the mechanic that did the tuneup last year said he advanced the timing......dont know what it was before he did that though.
kevin, are you disconnecting the computer plug from the distributor? you will never get an accurate reading if it is not disconnected and the car will run much worse than it did before. if your not sure about what i'm talking about, on all computer controlled ignition systems the computer controls the advance and dwell. you have to disconnect the four pin plug that comes out of the back of the distributor to set timing or else the computer will constantly try to override your timing inputs to acheive proper air/fuel ratio. also, depending on how many miles are on the engine (over 100k) i would advance it to 8* instead of six. this is just to take up a bit of the timing chain slack from the last twenty years and bazillion miles. i've been doing this for years with no adverse affects, don't really know if it helps or not, just something i do. :smash:
