Default 69 Owners

Need advice on what to look for when considering a 69. I looked at one today that needs a lot of work to bring it back to its former glory. Its a low option car. No tilt, no A/C no power steering and with a 4 speed. The speedo and tach are not working and an after market oil press gauge has been put in. It appeared to have the original motor 350/350 just from the apperence of the engine bay and condition of motor mounts etc. etc. The owner has know idea of mileage, he has had it for 5 years and has only driven it twice. He is a farmer in rural TN and he says that he bought it from a lady from Lakeland, that had got it from a dead uncles estate and that she was going to restore it but didn't have time nor money. The car is red with black inside. It does have original rims. Needs paint and interior work. I drove the car and it runs really strong, you could tell that it had not been driven in some time. Clutch is loose and it has manifold leaks at pipe connections I did notice that studs on both manifolds were rusted almost through and one was broken off (where pipe fits to manifold). Any suggestions or thoughts? He says that he gave $11000.00 for it but would take something close to $10000.00 is it worth it?

Thanks
Trent81

Sounds kinda high on the price. http://www.1969corvettes.com should have some good information on figuring out if the engine is original. Check the pad on the passenger side front of the engine for the last digits of the car's VIN and one of the suffixes listed at the website.

You need to find someone from down ther to look at the car. it might be a nice survivor it might be a complete pile...

Hard to tell from here :D

But it probably is pretty rust free which is a big plus.
Pictures or a personal inspection are needed.

I paid $7500 for mine and was in much better condition from what you are saying, and I live in Ohio, where the prices are generally a bit higher.
IMHO, you should pass on that one unless you could get it for $7k or less.

Check the numbers and frame, at least. If you don't feel comfortable, please get help. This is the MOST important step of ownership.

Oh I can tell you LOTS of stuff to check, if you want to be ****. The priciest pieces to fix will be the frame, windshield frame, and body (of course). There are lots of other areas to look at, but these are the most common problem areas and cost a lot to fix. That said, 69's are great...they are good looking chrome bumper sharks, and the motor is sooo easy to work on  . Good luck with your search.

1969's rule. :D

Given that, sounds way too far gone for the price and considering it is a low option small block.

My recomendation, keep looking, a much better deal will come along.

I've had mine for 5 years now and it was in similar condition except it sounds like it had better paint. Low option, non-original engine, power nothing. That paint was quite good, the interior had been changed from saddle to black, but overall it was in decent condition. Speedo & tach didn't work, had some minor electircal problems. I paid $6700 for it.

$10,000 seems AWFULLY high. It is a coupe and not a convertible, right?

Check for frame rust in front of the trailing arm location.

Thanks for all of the replys. The car has zero rust anywhere on the frame. The motor is original and the car does have all of its parts. Its just that some aren't working at the moment :yesnod: It can be driven every day like it is. I wouldn't do that but there is nothing wrong with the car mechaincally, other than the sloppy clutch. I have some pictures I just need to figure out how to post them.

Thanks guys
