On the weekend I blew up my motor. Threw a rod. I am looking at putting in a long block either a 383 or ZZ4. Other than using my water pump are there any other issues I am going to run into? Will the oil pan that comes on the new motor fit in my Standard frame or will I need to order a new one ( mine has many dents and 3 holes right now) Thanks for the help
If it helps any I just put a turn key ZZ4 in my 82. Had to change the water pump to a short one from Edelbrock but did not have any real issues with the engine. The oil pan that came on the ZZ4 fit right in.
The ZZ4 comes with an electronic tach connection, my 70 had mechanical one. Summit would not exchange.
Also, with a Holley on the ZZ4 manifold, would not clear the hood and had to put on an L88 scoop.
Exhaust manifold has D shaped ports that do not match the stock. I bought Hedman Headers made for the ZZ4.
Otherwise have been very happy with the ZZ4. It Aotocrosses very good.
If you have a manual tranny be sure to take the flex plate off!
Just finished on the weekend switching the engine to a ZZ383. Problems I encountered.
New flywheel as old would not match
New intake (Edelbrock)) as my old would bolt up but not seal as the ports on the new heads are huge. Needed to modify the throttle linkage as it was way off.
Once installed headers could not use factory mounting holes for wire looms so needed to custom(New covers are center bold so used old looms and bent and actually looks good)
Water pump interference. Ground down one bolt on engine timing cover 85%. can still remove but not much shoulder on bolt. Also ground down all bolts on back of water pump (removed raised lip and numbers)
Am in the process of setting up carb, timing and stopping exhaust leaks.
Will update once complete.
Still strugling with the exhaust leaks. Have changed the exhaust gasket twice. Have tried to put high temp silicone on both sides of a new gasket and quiet until I step on it and it blows out the gasket. Will continue to try. Not sure also looking into getting another set of headers to fit a 76 standard with a flange to fit the fast burn aluminum heads with D ports.
I emailed Headman, Hooker and Summit and received as of today have only heard from Headman who gave me the information I was afraid of. I need to buy a new set of headers. They gave me part numbers. I needed to look around to find someone with a set in stock. I was being quoted 6 weeks. Found a set and they should be in Tomorrow. Will update once I have them installed and their are no exhaust leaks. Here is the response i received:

Installed the new headers last night. Needed to cut exhaust as new headers use ball and socket collector. Still fighting exhaust leak on connection to origional exhaust. Will look into getting Mig'd
Had exhaust mig'd and all is quiet now. Have gone through a couple of heat cycles and have re tightened the header bolts into the head. Will wire them when i get some time so they do not loosen.
