Yes many have done it. Read the long sticky at the top and you will see wha tit takes. Yes it needs the computer even if you run it with a carb it still needs something to fire the plugs. Don't know why yo uwould not want to run the fuel injection though. The computer is your friend.
If you haven't worked on cars a lot a LS1 swap might be too ambitious a project. The only way to do the swap for a reasonable amount of $ is to do almost all of the work yourself. If you have to pay someone the cost escalates very quickly. My LS swap was by far the most ambitious car project I have ever undertaken, but I also had to replace the frame and rebuild the entire chassis.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't try the swap, just be prepared to spend a lot more time and $ than you expect. You will probably end up buying a lot of new tools along the way, but that is always a good thing.
