I'm installing dash and A/C wiring harnesses in my '73. Since I have the dash completely removed, I saw this huge cast iron steering support piece. Can someone tell me if the light weight piece from the later model C3's is interchangeable? Also, what year did GM do away with the Cast Iron piece.
They are interchangeable. I swapped in the stamped steel piece when I converted my car from auto to manual transmission, it fit my -72 without any mods. I got the part with the pedal setup I bought, I was told they were from -75 but don't know for sure.
Hey Y'all,
I just wanted to say that this is one of the easiest ways to reduce weight. If anyone has their speedo and tach out, then swapping out the heavy cast iron steering wheel support(9 lbs.) for the newer stamped steel support(3.4 lbs.) only takes a few minutes.
I bought the new support from a Corvette only junk yard called "Contemporary Corvette" in Bristol, PA. They shipped the part the next day, and charged me $25 plus freight (about $11).
Thanks again to the Corvette Forum for all their help!
