I recently replaced the vacuum advance on my 1968 SB. The new unit did not come with a plastic sleeve on the vertical arm; the sleeve on the existing unit was trashed.
How important is this sleeve?
Apparently the sleeve limits overall travel of the arm as well as side-to-side movement. I fabbed up a small brass tube with the same dimensions as what was left of the plastic sleeve, I can install that if need be. Just not sure what to do.
Currently set to 35 deg total which gives me around 16 initial. New can is a "B1".
The sleeve was used to limit the advance from the vacuum advance. We limit the advance from the vacuum advance to 10 to 12 degrees since todays unleaded reformulated gasoline burns faster than leaded gasoline. For most engines other than a hot cammed engine we use a B26 vacuum advance with a sleeve on the vacuum advance pin that limits the travel of the vacuum advance to about 0.120".
