Default Muncie problems

Hi, Im new to the classic car world and dont really know much about mechanics. I was driving my car today and all was well until i began to down shift and could not do anything. The transmission is stuck in fourth gear. The shifter is very hard to move and will not go ito any other gear. The clutch seems to be working, so what could be wrong?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Vette world! The first place to look is the shifter and linkage on the side of the trannie. You will have to get under the car and see if you can manually move the 3-4 lever back to the center position. If you can't move it, then disconnect the shifter from the trannie arm and try again. If now it moves, then it is a shifter issue, if you still can't move it, then it's a trannie problem and it will have to be removed and repaired. I can post a picture of the linkage if it will help you.

Hello and thanks Duke94! I will try that later today. I shouldnt need a picture, I took the console apart last night so I can see the linkage, just have to get the car off the ground. Thanks again!

Could the reverse lever have something to do with it? I ask because when I pull the lever up the shifter will move side to side but still will not engage in any other gear. Thanks

Hi duke94! I'm pretty sure the problem is in the shifter, I did what you suggested and I could move all the rods once disconnected from the shifter. My question is do I need to remove the shifter to repair it? Can a shifter even be repaired? Thanks for the advise!

You can try to spray it with a penatrating lube (WD-40 etc) to see if it will loosen up. The best way is to remove it and take it apart for rebuild. All the Vette Suppliers sell a rebuild kit.
Here is the Willcox one.

Here's the one from my 71'. Biggest pain is removing the 2 bolts that hold the shifter to the bracket. Tight quarters!!

Thanks Duke94 I apperciate all the help! I do have another question of course, I noticed when working on it today that the reverse linkage has a cable that is supposed to be attched but it wasnt and when i did attch it the cable must be frozen cause i couldnt move it out of reverse when connected. What is this cable for? Thanks!

the cable is for locking the steering when the car is in reverse and the key is removed. The problem you are describing is usually caused by a bolt loosening on the levers on the side of the case that the rods attach to. Check those bolts before removing the shifter if you havent already done so.

Happened to me twice on my 69. Raised the car and simply tightened the bolts. Must be a fairly common issue.
