I was doing a tuneup on my family car this morning . Its a 95 Galant . I was changing the plugs, wires, fuel filter etc. Well, the last item I changed was the fuel filter. It was pretty straight forward. Well, after I finished installing it. I turned the ignition on to check for leaks. It was ok. Then I went to start it and it wouldnt start. I fiqure that the fuel had to fill the line again. I tried again, nothin. As i walked to check the line......BOOM! My car was engulfed. I felt the heat right at my face. I scrambled to use my garden hose but luck would have it, it was F!@#$ frozen with water. Jesus. Then I was in such a panic because the car is half in the garage and half outside. My vette in the garage and my other car was behind . I went crazy looking for my kids. Then I realized they were never outside. I called 911 from my garage (thanks God i put a phone in the garage) and i saw my $12.99 fire extinguisher I bought from JC Whitney 8 years ago laying on the floor. I quickly shook it and it put the fire out in seconds. The whole ordeal took about 4 minutes but it really burned the hell out of my harness, hood, and most of the hoses. My insurance will cover but Just a reminder to all. Carry a Fire extinguisher when working on a car. Im going out right now to Walmart to buy the biggest one they carry.
I have a big one mounted by the grarge door. the therory is that if there is a fire you will run out of the garage, then realise you need an extinguisher which had better be between you and the fire!
I have three or four fire extinguishers mounted in different parts of the garage. And whenever I work with fuel, I place an extinguisher within arms reach just in case. I learned the hard way by burning a car too. Hindsight is truly 20/20 vision! I am glad that you and the family (including the vette) are okay. Hope that the damage does not cost you too much.
Two things I won't drive the vette without are a seatbelt and fire extinguisher. I also have them placed throughout the house. You can never be to careful. Glad your o.k.
That happened to my truck a couple of years ago, it happens faster than one would think doesn't it?!?!?!?! I ended up pushing it out of the garage and getting it with the hose, but not before burning up the entire harness under the hood.
:cry :mad
Hope it all turns out OK
Glad your ok.. That reminds me.. I finished off this room where my vette now lives and I remembered to purchase a good fire extinguisher which is still in the box on the work bench. I've been meaning to mount it but just haven't gotten around to it. I think I'll do it tonight. You know it takes all of about 2 screws to mount the thing.. Funny how you put things off.. Thanks for the reminder and again.. glad everyone is ok!
Bummer, Dude! On a practical note, see if they'll total the Galant. I've done a bunch of burn jobs, and it's tough to get 'em right. If they do want to fix it, make sure they keep the claim and repair order open until your sure it is right.
I always have one in the C3, I need to put one in the C4. My hood insulation drooped down on the 75 once and started a fire. Fortunately, I pulled out the burning crap and was able to control it. You never know when you're going to need one. You can even get those tiny halon ones that will fit just about anywhere.
If you do not have a fire extinguisher in your C3, you can get on now, custom built for C3 Corvette's. The bracket is very study and allows for easy removal of Fire extinguisher. The Amerex fire extinguishers are of high quailty. See my web page for more details.
