Default Evaporust

Bought some of that Evaporust liquid last week at a flea market, I tell you that stuff works great. It will save you a lot of time and money cleaning up all those hard to find clips and bolts. It says it's not toxic and no acids. Here's a link. This is not a plug for sales. I was just surprised that it works so well.

I've used that my self on a couple of the Vettes parts. Harbor Freight has also has the gallon for sale. I used to order it from Summit Racing. Great stuff.

Gimicky name, but it's a GREAT product. Best price around here is from Autozone. It'll also remove corrosion from aluminum parts, dunno if it has any lasting effects if you leave AL in to long, but I would guess probably not. I used it to eat the rust/corrosion out of some cylinders on an engine that sat for a few years with no head on it. The piston crowns and cylinder walls look like new

I have not used it but others have reported that it may be a citric acid passivation process. If so, aluminum may continue to corrode.

I dunno why I never thought of it earlier, but I can actually test it. I'll polish up a chunk of aluminum and leave it half submersed to see if it etches the surface, we'll have our answer

Marketing hype at it's best.
I guess it why some of those guys get the big bucks, like the financial chairmans.

It has to be an acid or it won't do what it claims.
It's just not concentrated enough to be reported completely to the gov.
Claims of the FBI using it for gun bluing removal, white vinegar does the same thing @ only 5% solution.

OSPHO does the same, Metal Prep from Homey Depot (a lot cheaper) all contain phosphoric acid, common to these type of products or very similar.
Essentially, you can make your own 6.1ph rust remover from them for a LOT less. If you want it to work faster and deeper, dilute less.
1 gal Metal Prep costs $13.00/gal
1 liter Enviro Rust from link $9.99/liter
That would be 9.99 x 3.785 = $37.81/gal
Now you can dilute the Metal prep at least 100% to match the ph of 6.1
The Enviro stuff is pretty pricey.

As far as being non toxic, almost all colas (Coke) contain phosphoric acid, so it is non toxic too.

Just cleaned some rusted cast exhaust manifolds the other day, probably used 2 bucks worth of Metal Prep and still have a 5 gal bucket of solution left.
Been using this or Ospho for decades.

Here is a link to a similar acid and complete method with common additional ingrediants. Good info.
http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/4810405.html

No matter which similar products you use., they can be used 2 ways.
For painting, rinse off immediately dry and prime
For rust inhibiter (such as bolts etc) let dry without rinsing and dip in thick oil bath.
Works great.

Hi Noonie,

I'd like to try the Metal Prep or OSPHO from Home depot as it sounds like the same item as evapo-rust except it's cheaper. However, I can't seem to locate it on the Home depot site. Can you please verify the name of the product or products? Thanks Don

You're right, I got the names mixed up, just used to grabbing the bottle by it's shape.

Here is a pic of it from Homey Depot

Not quite a strong as OSPHO, but a LOT cheaper, but a lot stronger than Evaporust, You can dilute it. You can get OSPHO at any auto paint jobber but, why.

I use this on metal even after sandblasting to promote adhesion too, but I rinse it, and dry it right away.

Here are original rusted bolts that I left in it full stength for a couple hours, not rinsed water and but let dry in the sun, you can then brush any loose stuff off and dip in heavy oil for the black oxide look.

Here is the frame etc.

Pressure cleaned first, them sprayed with phos acid in a weed sprayer and then let to dry. Inside, it will stay like this for over a year or more without forming any surface rust. I wire brushed lightly and painted with rustoleum.

Be careful over concrete you care about, it will etch it hard. Try a little spot just to see.

Will the heavy oil treatment eventually rust or will the "black oxide look" protect like a coat paint?

.
FWIW:

That product is NOT available at HD (here in NC anyway). I did find it on Ebay at a cost of $8.25 per quart plus $12.57 shipping...

So, it's $83.08 per gallon on Ebay vs. OSPHO for $47.96 a gallon at my local Ace Hardware ($11.99 per quart), or buy direct http://www.ospho.com/index.htm for $139.00 for 4 gallons.

Not sure what I'd ever do with 4 gallons though....

I bought 10 or 12 gallons in Ft Lauderdale HD around last December to do a driveway and it was right around 14 bucks or less. Might be a regional thing, HD doesn't carry screen doors around here.

Here is an old receipt, only one I had here. It at least gives you their sku number

Just a quick google gives you same stuff at a little more, but a lot less than OSPHO, OSPHO is better stuff if you can get a good price.

I'm with noonie on this one. I've been using the Klean Strip phosphoric acid etch for years with great results. I get mine from the Home Despots here in CT for 14 bucks.

Default like the stuff

I like evapo rust. I can’t say I have been using other methods though and will have to try the Klean Strip to see it works faster. I have been using it on my 72 for a few months now and it eats pretty much all rust with the exception of those thick black blotches that need to be chilled out.

I used it on my trailing arm rebuild I just finished last week. Now I did have to send the arms in to be blasted but everything else, the bearing hub, rotor, calipers, caliper mount spindle, bolts, & it got every thing off. The more you use it the weaker it gets. And I do suggest filtering one time after it gets dark. After that it’s closed to being useless so get ready to dump it. As a reference one five gallon bucket will get everything mentioned above including half shafts and another pound of odds and ends.

These are my issues with it.
You have to soak some stuff for days, It works fast new but quickly loses strength, you have to remove black residue that forms from used evaporate its not a good idea to paint over the residue. Flash rust will occur if you wash parts and set them out to dry you have to quickly dry them off.

Over all I like it and you can use it with your bare hands. Do not put your hand in this stuff if you have a cut it will burn for a while.
