a new rearend can make. I just had the Richmond 3:70 installed in my '77. I had the original 3:08 in my automatic TH350, and was sick of the no power at takeoff. The car feels like I have a new engine.
I have only driven it once since the install, so I'm not quite used to the high RPM's cruising at 70 MPH. My mechanic assures me that going on out of town trips of around 300 miles will NOT hurt the engine!
I'm going to Easley South Carolina next month for the POKER RUN and don't want to have problems!!!!!!!!!!
Re: WOW !!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE........... (vettecor)
If you plan on taking a lot of freeway trips, 700R4 or 2004R is the way to go with that rear gear. Driving in 4th would be like driving in 3rd w/ a 2.59:1 ratio. I have 3.55s in my car, and I must say they probably do make the difference. Not much power in this car, but it sure feels quick.

I drove to from Indiana to Utah about 2+ years ago with my 79 with 3.70 rear gears and original 4-speed tranny. Just last year, I made the return trip. No problems either direction.
Re: WOW !!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE........... (vettecor)
A performance rear gear ratio can be the best bang for the buck compared to the engine mods required to match. 3.70's are probably the best compromise ratio. I love my 3.90's and will not be freeway driving some more with the O/D installed this year. Enjoy!

CONSIDERING YOUR SPEED LIMITS I HAVE TO AGREE ;)
On autobahn it´s not a good thing to run such a high gear with a 350.
RICERS EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

I've been curious about which diff gears I have in my '79. I turn about 3250-3300 at 70 mph (normal freeway cruising speed around here :reddevil ). I've been told it's probably 3:73. Does that sound right?

I'm interested to hear if you noticed any noise from the Richmond gears? I heard these gear sets are noisey from the factory, but there are a lot of them sold.

I'll bet I won't hear it over my less-noisy gear drive !

The easiest way to find out for sure is to jack up the rear end and count how many rotations your drive shaft turns for one rotation of the tire.
Example
one rotation of the rear wheel with a 3.55 rear ratio, should trun the driveshaft 3 and 1/2 times approx and 3 3/4 approx for 3.70 and 4 + a bit for 4.11 ratio
any way you get the point.
I hope this helps
