well, right when it happened i was rolling and it made that grinding noise trying to get it into gear. Then when I was in the drive way i put it into first w/ ease and got nothing at all. I'm going to pull it regaurdless but i was hoping to buy a rebuild kit but i don't know if that'll work now. Does anyone have a site that offers parts? I checked w/ summit and they have a basic kit for like 140 bucks.
I know it might be off the wall, but I had similar symptoms and found this;
Never saw one do that before. the car is a bit hot and driven accordingly, but not abused.
On another note, a buddy of mine gave me ****, so I did a basic write up on transmission install. The reverse would be for removal. Really basic and I don't want to insult, but click away if you're interested.
haha that's funny sh*t! My money is on the slider/syncro being out and first gear being fine. although i don't think i have a pair big enough to slide that cover off and find out. Even though it sounds easy I'm sure i'll mess it up some how. lol

You really can't mess anything up, if the fork stays inside you can get it out by moving 1-2 slider forward.
Hey, Avette, What tranny is that in your write up?
So those 4 bolts at the tail end of the bell housing is all it takes to slide her out then? There isn't a nut inside that i can't get to or anything? Cuz i'm kinda excited about this being easier than pulling that damn housing w/ the tranny.

Thats it and rolling it a little to get it to come down and out. Holding your mouth right helps to.

It's a TKO 500 in my '80.

Correct. 4 bolts and you're free. After the driveshaft, and all the other bullshet.
Set a jackstand with a 2" X 6" X however tall you need under the pan and jack the engine down as far as you can without jacking anything up on the top side - ie. distributor, oil sending unit, etc.. you'll be able to access everything after that.
So why would i need to jack up the motor? Isn't there enough space to slide it back, down, then out?
First the trans holds the back of the motor up so you need a jack under it. You also sometimes have to raise and lower the back of the motor to get it just right so the input shaft of the trans will come down and out,its a bit tight.
Yeah...if you don't have the original shroud in place then you will need to put a jackstand under the rear of the motor. You also need to remove the rear transmission mount and emergency brake cable pulley. I highly advise that you use a camera to document how it's setup now...there's more modified vettes out there than stock, so unless you are going to buy all new parts for everything that's bolted on or will be restoring it back to original then you should document how everything is connected now so you can put it back the same as before. My vette was originally an automatic so I can remove my cross member which makes things a whole lot easier. You should use a floor jack to lower the tranny to the ground...it's very heavy and will dig a hole in concrete...and your hand if it's under it and it falls. In fact, there are special floor jacks just for this purpose which has a large flat area for the tranny to rest.
Never seen a jack that would do enough angles to get a Muncie out and down. I just lay under it on a creeper, use both hands , pull -wiggle -twist - down,set the trans on my chest and roll out. I'm old and frail so they must not weigh too much.
