Default Pittman Shaft Seal Replacement

The pittman shaft seal is leaking on my 71 roadster. The instructions for replacing the seal seem simple enough, but the steering lash adjustment after the shaft and seal are replaced seem a bit too much for me. Is this necessary because you have to loosen the lash adjustment screw to get the shaft out? Is there a simple solution to this? All the stuff about turning the wheel from stop to stop and using a torque wrench on the steering wheel sounds like overkill

You need to take a look at Jim Shea's paper on adjusting and rebuilding your steering gear. It is located on this page http://www.corvettefaq.com/susp.asp
There are also a bunch more articles and help links on that page that deal with steering issues.
