to the machine shop soon, and wanted opinions on what could/should be done. WHAT??? you thought this thread was XXX rated.. :jester The busted exhaust stud has to be removed, and I want a total rebuild on both heads while their out. Doesnt leak/burn oil (34K mi) , but I want new seals, 3 angle valve seats & a check of guides, springs, retainers. Would port and polish help these stock heads flow better? What else can I ask for? I can't afford new heads, so these will have to do for now. I am also going to install a mild Comp Cam (maybe 268) aluminum intake (RPM) and Dynamax Coated headers when the heads are done. The cam will dictate valve sping tension I know, but haven't completely decided which one yet. Suggestions from you performance experts on the machine process for the heads??? Thanks... as always...
Silvr77.....If they muck yours up.....you can have my old ones...
nothing wrong with them.....just a busted alternator stud in one...
they look clean as a whistle too....
you will love the headers....they are great and stop/reroute a lot of heat from coming through the firewall...
that car will roar compared to stock with your mods...
I had my stock L-82 heads milled (raise compression slightly), pocket ported, polished, gasket matched, and multi angle valve cut. These mods made a huge difference in the middle of the rpm band (3500 rpm). The engine pulls strong all the way to redline. The stock L-82 heads have larger valves 2.02 & 1.60 than the stock L-48 so this will make a big difference in flow, especially in the upper rpm range.
If I had it to do again I would have bought new heads for all the money I spent trying to make the stock heads flow. The new technology just flows better and there are some good deals if you look. I thought I would save money but I didn't. The good thing is I ended up with an engine that looks mostly stock but runs like a dog in heat!
Ylose: Thanks for the offer man, I just wish I could afford new heads all together. I still may get some, but I'll have to wait till next week to find out if I have a job or not! Motorola has recently "outsourced" all of it's
facilities and Maintenance functions. I interviewed with the new company, and won't know till next week if I'm hired. I'll keep ya posted! :yesnod:
Vettsite: Thanks for the info. Once I get an estimate from the shop, I'll make a decision on "machine old, or new". Tell me this though, can you get 100K miles of trouble free operation out of an aluminum head?
ALuminum heads are great, but the first time the car overheats, pull out the SUMMIT book because you will have problems. If you stick with just a valve job and have the heads magnafluxed, it will definetly be cheaper than new heads. But before you go much further, check out Jeg's and Summit etc... You may be surprised at how little a descent set of heads will cost. Also just my .02 , but if you are going to totally disassemble the heads, you might want to consider replacing valves, stems, pushrods, etc.. I know it all adds up, but you are already paying for the labor on tearing down & putting them back together. Remember, sometimes good cents (education) saves many dollars down the road. Good Luck!!!
