Default Another Engine Oil Question

I have been following the "List of Flat Tappet Oils" thread for several months now -- and it is great. I personally appreciate all the personal resources being poured into that effort. There are a number of options for folks to chose from according to their personal opinions.

Many of the current/mainstream engine oils have detergents and other additives such as seal conditioners included. I suspect these are not in the racing oils, and possibly none of the oils discussed in the Flat Tappet Oils thread. How important are these detergents and additives? Would my 40 year old BB benefit from those as well?

I too find the oil sticky quite interesting. My BB has recently been rebuilt and I am pondering the same questions. All I can say is that I wish I had known about reduced zinc and phosphorous back in 2005. I bought my car in 2004 and changed the oil a number of times. My oil selection probably contributed to wiped lobes on my original cam. Who knows.

I am seriously leaning towards mineral-based racing oil and changing the oil more often. I would rather not use any oil where I have to add ZDDP. The cost of oil is minimal when you consider the cost of fixing your motor. Detergents should not be necessary if your car is running well or recently rebuilt. I have never been a big fan of additives of any kind. But then again, what the hell do I know.
