I am going to replace the carpet on my 80. I've ordered the carpet and the insulation. I was looking at the old isulation and all the dirt and garbage on the floor board and was wondering if it would be a good idea to apply undercoating to the floor board before installing all the new carpet and insulation?
Has anyone ever thought of / done this? Any benefits? Would the undercoating get gummy due to heat? Not sure if there is any benefit to this. I just thought it may be a nice way to keep the floor board from deteriorating.
I put down home made lizard skin (paint mixed with micro spheres) on the bare metal, then reflectix, then carpet underlay and carpet. The micro spheres helps with heat, and maybe some with sound, only took about $10 of micro spheres. Reflectix helps mainly with heat. Dynamat or fatmat like bee jay used is also a good way to go - just more expensive than reflectix.
Many put rust preventative paint (i.e. POR-15, Rustbullet) on the metal floorboards when replacing the carpet. As mentioned, now would be the time to put sound deadening and heat reflecting products in if you desire. Also as mentioned, it's a good idea to replace the heater core - don't want coolant ruining your new carpet.
