I was told a few weeks ago that my trans is a Muncie from 1964, case number 3851325 the other number is on the side plate 3831707. There is one more number: F179799 Is that the number that matches the vin of the car? If so how can I find out what this was originally installed in? Thanks for the help.
Tom;
I am not positive but i do not believe those number are VIN. I think only the engine received the VIN of the car. That trans was used in all GM models so it would be difficult to tell exactly what type of vehicle it can in.
How did the deal on the M-21 M-22? that you were looking at come out?
Hey Pete, Hopefully the M-21 will work out for me, we checked out the gears and its got new brass inside and the gears look like new. Now its time to see how much he wants for it. I hope that he wants 400 or less for it, dont want to pay too much, but its a nice trany! My M-20 is in pretty good shape too, but now that I have seen the bigger stronger box I am sold on it.
The only difference between yours and his is the cluster shaft diameter. Yours is 7/8" and newer ones are 1". If your trans is is good shape I would not be afraid of it. Unless you plan on some repeated hard hole shots it will serve you well. Muncies are pretty tough trans if used with a little common sense. Most of the problem I have seen with them were driver inflicted. I have used some 7/8" shaft trans in some of my 740 HP race cars (circle track) and have never broke one. But we don't do any holes shots either.
Thanks Pete, I know my rat motor is going to put out about 475+ hp, I want everything to live behind it too, so no hole shots, just some put the pedal to the floor and hang on! Maybe I should put some new brass in mine and forget about it?
