So my 383 shortblock is complete and I need to decide on a set of aluminum heads to buy. I have a 268h comp cam and edelbrock performer intake. Budget is around 1200 dollars and I am shooting to hit 400hp if possible. I have my eye set on these trick flow 23s http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFS-30400002/
any suggestions or recommondations? Edelbrock performer rpm heads look pretty good as well.
I went with the edelbrock 60739 (70cc) rpm heads, most people choose the 64cc version rather than the 70cc but looking at the flow rates on edelbrocks web site, the 70cc heads flow better than the 64cc heads. The larger chamber un-shrouds the valves better and allows better flow. Compression ratio can be brought up by using a slightly dommed piston if you wish to get in to the 10:1 ratio zone, with a flat top piston a 70cc head will put you in the 9.6:1 area.
Talked to a guy at car show on Saturday. 383 with a 230ish hyd roller cam. Turbo 400 tranny. Went from 330 rear wheel hp to 370 rear wheel hp just by swapping from the old AFR 195's to the new AFR 195's.

I have been using an earlier set of the TF 23* 64cc heads on my stroker. I am satisfied with the price/performance on my street car.
I had a set of the first generation Trick Flow twist wedge heads that I bought around 1996. Back then, they were $795 complete and new from Summit. No one knew who Trick Flow was either. Jegs didn't sell them. They were flat-out awesome heads. That's the only experience I have with TF.
I currently have a used and complete set of GMPP Fastburn heads for sale. PM me if interested.
Trick Flow 23* heads are good....they wake up with a port job and can easily support 500hp with the right cam...not a bad choic....
AFR 195 eliminators and a better matching cam....you will make way more then 400hp....probably more like 450hp with a mild cam...500+ with a decent sized hyd roller.
I believe Makoshark 72 had a NEW set of GM Fastburn heads for sale in the C3 Parts section....those would work well....
A 268H (if it is the old school comp 268h) is a TINY cam for a 383.....if that is the final choice on the cam....don't worry about spending too much money on the heads as it would be lucky to make 350-375hp with that cam.... Maybe just throw some Edelbrock RPM heads or something cheap on there....maybe some Vortecs....you could build a torque monster with Vortecs, 383" and that cam...
If you are sticking to a hyd flat cam....maybe something like this would get you in the 450-475hp range....
the cam is the comp cam xtreme energy 268h, with very similar specs to the second one you linked. If this cam does not put out the power I want I will swap it after the engine is broken in.

You are correct sir, I certainly hope people understand flow numbers, I made 550HP with a 406ci motor with 11:1cr and 250 duration solid roller cam with over .600" lift with heads that flow similar numbers to these new 195's,
They don't belong on a mild 350ci anymore, these are serious heads
