Default Transmission O ring

I did not see an o ring come off/out when I removed the transmission pan on my TH400 so I don't know where to put the new one, I am guessing it goes on the plastic filler tube where the new filter's black rubber grommet plugs in to? Also, there doesn't appear to be anything 'inside' the old filter, but there is 'something' inside the new filter, almost feels like styrofoam. Guess it's suppose to be there? Thanks for the help in advance.

The o-ring goes on the filter tube. Shouldn't harm anything if it is missing as the tube fits into a tight bushing anyway. The filter material sounds normal.

I'd still make sure the dipstick tube has the seal. the seal is on there most likely due to the different expansion rates of the metals.
