I drove my Vette last night for the first time since the Fall and I noticed a new noise. The fan is hitting the bottom of the fan shroud extension. It is a 74 L48 with A/C. I have a theory about why this is happening but wanted to run it by you all for your opinions.
This car had a serious valve cover leak for years. This soaked the engine mounts and caused them to deteriorate. I know that the mounts are shot but was putting off replacing them until I started the frame-off. Now my theory, I think that the engine mounts are so soft and squishy that they have allowed the engine sink slightly in the engine compartment causing the fan to "rub" the lower fan shroud.
In my experience, when a fan starts hitting a shroud, it's related to a motor mount problem.
EDIT: Usually, one mount goes and you get an occasional noise when the motor moves as it torques over. Here it sounds like you may have a problem with both mounts, if the noise is constant.
Mack, you are right, BOTH mounts are shot and I have heard of the fan hitting while the engine is torqued over. I have just never had one sink enough to hit the shroud while idling. Also, mine doesn't hit under load. I assume it has the interlocking mounts. I am replacing the motor mounts tonight. If that doesn't fix the problem (I am almost positive it will), I'll be back on here tomorrow asking for other options.
