Because in most independent tests over the years they fared very poorly on filtering proficiency. From what I read, they have improved significantly in recent years. Still hard to beat anything made by Wix.
Basically the Fram has relatively low filter surface area and the anti-drainback valve doesn't work well. This allows the oil to drain back into the oil pan on vehicles that don't mount the filter vertically like my 350. That results in a momentary dry start until the filter fills again.
Thank you for your investagation, I always thought Fram was one of the best!! I have a 1972 350 sbc new rebuild with a fram on it I will be changing to a baldwin I think. AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE INFO.
I only have one car I'll use a Fram filter on, my '55 Plymouth(and mostly because it's the only one available locally). The oil filter was an option, and it's a bypass type system. That means it filters some of the oil, some of the time Everything else gets a quality filter
I've used AC Delco & Purolator filters on my cars with no problems. Never really messed with Fram filters (except back in the '80's..still got two old PH8A's from back then in my garage).

This is an interesting article. I use either Wix or Delco on mine.
I have never used anything but Fram filters on any of my cars in 38 years of driving. So I am going to say that the filter surface area must be sufficient to do the job required and that the anti drainback weakness cannot be that much of a weakness.

X2. I never had a problem with any oil filter, Fram or otherwise.
