I know everyone says Spicer but they aren't always available. what about this Brute Force joint? Is it as good, so-so, or what. Last one I used were TRW's but haven't installed them yet.
Thanks,
Gary
Brute Force without the grease zert is my choice, personally I think it is a toss up as to which is the best. They are basically the same design, probably made out of the same strength material, so either one should work fine and give you plenty of life.
I used Spicer in mine because that is what the drive shaft shop has. They are solid and he said they are as strong as any out there. The Brute Force should be good as many here are using them.
Did my pictures come through on email.
I found my spicers (Solid) at a driveline specialty shop. About $23 each for the half shafts. I think they are superior to any aftermarket ones but That's just my opinion. I do not think it is a case of breaking but more about how long they last.
Steve I'll probably go with the Brute force. I checked the autozones around here and they all stock only 2 joints, so I'll have to drive to couple of different towns but no big deal.
Thanks,
Gary
Flareside or others.
I just picked up a complete set of Spicers just like you have in your pic Flareside. I can get the joint to into the halfshafts but as far as I can tell there is no way I can get the joint into the halfshaft flange that connects to the hub in the trailing arm. Not enough clearance to fit the joint into the flange.
Whats up?
The Spicer Part Numbers I have are 5-627X just like yours.

I had that problem one time with aftermarket U-joints that were actually slightly bigger (just the center casting, not overall length)) than the spicers. My spicers went in fine. Sometimes the flange gets squeezed together when you are taking the old u-joints out. :smash:
Looking at my reciept and they are listed as:
Spicer 1350 Non/Grease Joint 5-627X.
Gonna look at it again tomorrow and then go talk to the driveshaft guys.
I actually found a driveshaft house 5 miles away that sells the spicers. Ihad him check the 1/2 shaft number and he said 5-178x ,$16.93 each.
I didn't ask him if there were zerks on these or if zerks are even offered on the spicers?

Re: Best U-Joint to use (One GM A Tech)
I am going to replace the u-joints on my half shafts this weekend because I have a slight vibration. I think I am going to go with stock, I don't know if snapping u-joints has been a big problem but I really can't see buying the best u-joints for 300 - 350 RWHP.
I could be wrong here and someone can set me straight about this. Now if you were constantly at the track and running slicks with low et's then you might need them.
I stopped at autozone today to check out the Brute Force joints. I was impressed enough to buy them forget the Spicers for now. USA made,
HD Forging, no zerks, $12.99 on the shelf with 1 yr warranty and no shipping charges :D They also had the yoke U bolts. We have to get a break sometime
Gary
I do not Know anything about Brute Force,They may be fine... but Breaking the joints is not the big problem with low quality joints. The reason I go with spicer is how they last. Half shafts put a different load on the joints than a drive shaft. EVERY cheap U-joint I've seen installed on a half shat has failed very quickly.(not broken, just worn out) How often do you want to do the job? That is the question... :smash: :smash: :smash:
I can't find 5-178x anywhere on the Spicer site. Maybe it's a discontinued part number? I did find it on a few suppliers web sites, and they show it as a 1350 series joint. The Spicer site shows 5-627x as a 1350 as well, so they may be interchangeable. I hope...
I did notice that the 5-627x is also a discontinued part number :( Spicer has a new, improved model under a new number.
James, when you remove all the bearings and caps from the joint, you still can't get it between the flanges?

James, did you compare the new and old joints? Are they the same size? I haven't removed mine yet. I can crawl under there tonight and take some measurements.
