I`ve read that on the 70`s C3s the gear has to be placed in reverse to be able to take the key out of the ignition. This is on the man trans. Is this true?
I can pick out my key in my-73 without the trans in reverse..
I know that was pretty common on a lot of cars in the 70's and 80's, but I don't know if it was on manual tranny 'vettes. If it was, it was activated by a rod that runs down the steering column, through the firewall to a lock out mechanism under the car, that is connected to the shifter linkage. Automatic cars have something similar that prevent them from starting in any gear accept neutral or park. If it was on your car, it was probably disconnected during some "Bubba" work that was done on your car. The automatic lock out was disconnected on my car when I got it. The previous owner told me it had worked until he had the transmission filter changed. After I got the car and got under it, I saw that the cable was disconnected. I replaced the cable and it was working fine from then on.
Don't know about '70, but on my '72, it's gotta be in reverse - so I think your '73 should be that way too. I bet either your ignition key or lock is worn out ...
My guess is that the "locking mechanism"at the trans is busted, because when you go from reverse you have to use a mild amount of violence to get it in neutral..As soon i get out from the paintshop i`ll get under it and investigate ..Sounds lika a whole afternoon..Laying under the vette and have some fun..I wounder what else i will find under there..Bin Laden perhaps.. :D
HUMM...you guys cry about a lousey interlock, when I changed from stick to automatic o/drive....I used the stick shifter, with not even a reverse lockout, or a detent, or anything...just move the lever...even if at speed...ouch!!!
Yes that is how manuals are. You cannot remove the key until it is in the "lock" position and the switch will not go into the lock position unless the trans is in reverse. (park on automatics). If you can remove the key in any other position, The key itself is worn or the lock cylinder is worn.. Making a new key from you old one won't fix it. You have to make a key from the tumbler code or a un-used key. A good locksmith can do that. :yesnod:
