Tach died a few weeks ago, just stop working without any warning. Installed a WILCOX tach circuit board and now the tach kinda works. While I am waiting for a response from WILCOX I am hoping someone here may have an opinion on what is causing this issue.
I think the tach is reading slightly low and when the tach hits 2600rpm the needle starts to twitch a little, when the needle hits 3000rpm it drops to 0rpm untill the engine slows to below 3000rpm, at this point the needle willl start to read rpm again.
Any thoughts? My 2 guesses are the distributor is messed up or the WILCOX board is faulty.
Here's a shot in the dark I'm saying this cause my 80 acted up for a while till I found a noise supressor on the passenger side of the intake , cream coloured wire, brown plugs, mine was orignal and the wire was broken and once in a while it would make contact, I have a pic of the thing put dont know how to post it , send me an e-mail and I'll send you the pic, Ron . I just took it out and soldered the wires and all is fine

The noise filter was already removed when I purchased the car a few months ago so this is not the issue. Thank you for the suggestion thou.
We had an isolated problem with some boards. A defective capacitor on the boards was not allowing bleed off signal! I felt that all these were returned and replaced however it is possible we have a stray.
What is causing me to wonder is that this problem was at the 2000 rpm range and not the 3000 rpm range.

Thank you for contacting me, I tried to call you today but I guess you guys are enjoying a holiday down there. The board was purchased about 3 weeks ago (billing date of April 22nd). It could be happening at 2000 rpm as I really do not think the needle is reading an accurate number, on my tach it starts acting up at 2600rpm and complely dies at anything over 3000rpm. How do you suggest we go from here?
Package arrived today after lunch, I installed the new board and no change. Wilcox do you think it could possibly be the tach itself or perhaps the distributor?
I would be willing to send you the entire tach for test/rebuild but if it might be the distributor this may be a waste of time.

Steve,
Yes, please do! That is a first! Send her down, I'll put it on the new testing machine and we'll figure out if its the tach or the distributor.
OK will do, I will send it out tomorrow (Wednesday). I will overnight it. Please call me when you know something. I will include all of my contact information in the package. Is there anything else you will need from me at this time?
