I have recently found that I need to replace my differential side yokes on my '69. I need to know what else should be replaced while Im in there. Also if anyone knows where I can get the best deals on these parts let me know.
The metal from those yokes went somewhere, for sure,....
check the posi clutches....if mainly silver surface...replace....if mainly black...they probably ok....
probably need carrier bearings, and small pinion bearing...for some crazy reason the main large pinion bearing seems to survive....dunno why...
the cross shaft probably has significant wear ridges on the sides....
of course all the seals...yoke, pinion, seal cover with RTV...
other than that, you may have to reshim the carrier...pattern...
I got mine from Eckler's. They sell reconditioned yokes that have a pressed in hardened end bottons.. These are better than new because the originals are only flame hardened. I replaced all six U-jounts, Rubber spring cushions, strut rod bushings and differential nose mount cushion. I had no leaks or bearing noises and did not do anything else.. So far so good. :smash:

I got both of my side yokes at Muskegon Brake - Only because Bairs was out of stock. Based on the excellent service, great communication and the helpful people at Bairs - I'm taking my my business there whenever possible. http://www.bairs.com
Ingar how much wear did youhave on the pin? curious to know because I checked a couple of used ones and asked the guys at Tom's to check a new one and they were .748"
Thanks,
Gary
See image. After replacing the pin I had zero lateral yoke movement.
Seems like as soon the pin gets a little wear it stops rotating and the process accelerates. (I have turned the pin just for taking the photo)
As you can see the yokes has dig in so deep in the pin that the splines started to mushroom.
Looks like the yoke tips are hardened, the splines not.
I'm pretty sure the yokes are original. Maybe they are hardened on the new diff (80-82).
WHOA!
That is a huge amount of wear. I would suggest to anyone that is going into their differential to replace side yokes that you also replace the clutch pack and the bearings. You really don't want to take this thing out in a few years to do it again do you?
Gary
Yup you have some wear there alright  The shaft itself shouldn't rotate though, it has a screw/pin going through it into the carrier. If the shaft rotated then the screw would be sheared off. I think thats why these carriers oval out the shaft bore under load? I see your yokes are worn right down to the snap rings which I guess would be around .200" worn from the end of the yoke.In that case a full rebuild would be in order.
Gary S- I wouldn't change the clutches unless they're really worn. In my case(55k miles) only .001" on average per clutch, with the pattern still showing. I heard of some guys having problems with some of the new clutches out now. I believe Eaton stopped making them, until Tom's Differentials ordered a lot to stock. So you don't know what type or brand you may get? This is just my opinion of course,I have 2 vettes both down,so make your own judgements.
Gary
GaryS: That's a good advice!! I didn't do it only to find out later that my posi doesn't hold. (Didn't have any experience at the time I did the diff job and wasn't aware that my posi was shot....)

From what you say there must be differences between 1980 (image) and earlier diff's. The center pin on mine is designed to rotate, it's only fixed to the carrier by a c-clip at each end.
After the center pin was replaced I had zero play, which to me should mean that the yoke ends had no wear.
The ends must look differently on a earlier diff. The distance to the c-clip was about 4mm (.16")
You're right on the pin, the 80-82 diffs have pins wich are only held in place by c clips.
If you have uneven tyre pressures or 2 different tyres in the back and you run low or without the posi additive the pin will wear. I also see your pin is all blue wich only happens at temps above 1200 F.
i bought diff rebuild kit from Drivetrain Specialists in Warren, Mich., included everything for rebuild, including new posi clutches for about $190. rebuilt yokes i got from Bairs, $90 apiece, spent $200 on Labor.
