What gears and transmission are you using now. I am running 3.55 with a 2004r 4 gear auto in my '79. About 1800 rpms on at 100kmh/60mph. I could go to 4:10 and with the 4 speed not rev a whole lot higher on the highway, maybe 22 or 2400. I guess what i'm getting at is members would need to know what transmission, rearend, tires and maybe what cam you are using in order to give you a GOOD ANSWER.

I have 4.56 and 200r4, 1st is useless. Shifts into 2nd after about 20 feet. I want a 3.73

I'm running 3.90's and they are great but obviously rev when on the highway without an O/D transmission. 3.55-3.70 would be a good balance ratio for a street car IMO.

This is probably not the advice you're looking to hear, but is something a lot of guys make mistakes with. The intended use of the car. If you're drag racing,....do the gears and converter swap. If you are street,...why not recam with something mild, and keep the gears you have? It will result in better economy, better driveability,....

I agree, but the 81 4spd stock gearing is 2:70 you would be fighting an uphill battle to try to get more low end with HP's..
