... using oven cleaner (MR.Muscle,etc...) to degrease/clean engine or engine bay? My brother in law insists its the easiest product for this job. Spray on, have a beer (or 2) hose off, clean engine! I'm curious about damaging hoses, paint, alluminum parts with such a strong chemical product...? Any thoughts? (BTW my b-i-l uses this on his restored/custom '64 Galaxie XL500)

I would avoid using it underhood! Yep, I found out the hard way yrs ago! It's strong stuff, and etched alum, stained paint and almost everything else it touched!
Go with a Simple Green followed by a good quarter car wash or similar. The ultimate underhood cleaning process I've found is a steam cleaning. Some car washes usta have these, but scarce these days!
Good Luck -Rod :chevy

Thanks for sharing your experience Rod! That's what I was afraid of... I don't want to f!@# up my Edbk aluminum dress up kit!!!!
Most strong oven cleaners contan NAOH (Sodium Hydroxide) also known as caustic soda and lye. It's extremely crossive. It's the same compound that's used in strong drain cleaners. I use it to make my own vat. Leave an AL part in it for a week and it will erode it. Check the label on the can and see what it contains before using it.
I am a big fan of Simple Green. Not that I am a tree hugger or anything, but the stuff just plain works! I have used this stuff on absolutely everything. No problems whatsoever.
I'm with ya on liking Simple Green! I've been thinking about putting some in the dishwasher!!! :D
And I'm about as far removed from an "arbourphile" as you can get!!!!
But I'm too lazy to get under the car and scrub this and rub that... I was hoping my b-i-l had a shortcut to a clean engine bay, but I guess not... :nonod:
I've used it sparingly with no ill effects...kept it off hoses and such. I like Castrol stuff. There was a post on here a while back about spraying it down, then using the hose hooked up to your hot water heater (BE CAREFUL) or hot connection on the washer. I did the hot water heater and got the steam bath effect....worked great. Of course my neighbors think I'm a nut case, but I gave up on trying to keep that stero type down long ago :D.
Among other things, I used oven cleaner (Easy-Off?) to remove 28 years of accumulated grease/gunk off of my transmission crossmember, and found it's absolutely the best stuff when it comes to dealing with this kind of hardcore mess. But then again, I did that with the crossmember off of the car, so there was no risk of ruining paint, aluminum parts, hoses, etc.
