Default do brake pads make noise

should the brake pads on a 81 make clicking noises when the car moves? I notice front pads have a flat plate (spring?) on the back of the pads. The rear pads do not.

What you may be hearing is your limited slip differential. Sometimes if the wrong gear oil is put in without additive the clutches in the diff. will grab. You can buy limited slip additive to put in if this is the case.

Could be a wheel bearing too.

wondered about that. Is there a way to tell other than taking it all apart?

Ujoints will make a clicking noise as well.

Are you sure it is from the front?

Not a rock or nail in a tire?

Does the sound change in speed with the vehicle speed or stay the same no matter what?

Could be any one of those things. The pads shouldn't make noise while moving, but may "click" at the beginning of braking as they rock forward or back on the pin and make contact with the caliper casting. Sounds like you have shims in the front calipers.
