I am getting a pop under the choke plate. It happens when the choke opens and typically when I give it a little gas. It also typically kills the engine when it happens but not always. When it happens you can see a spark happen right and smoke comes out from the front part of the carb by the choke plate.

Its got new heads new cam. Ill check for vacuum leaks and recheck the timing. I though it is running too lean but i dont really know how to fix that other then adjusting the choke.
I have had experience on Holley's and when getting a back fire, which by the way made me check the power valve, made me deceide the carb was to lean on the accelerator 'shot'. I increased the pump(s) cc's and then the shooter size until it stopped. I worked the accelerator ramps a bit and found that sweet spot.
I think Q-Jet and Carter or similar brands have options to change up the size of the accelerator shot to maybe stop that back fire if in fact that is the cause.
Im running a 600cfm edelbrock. I increased the accelerator shot to max of the 3 settings it has. That seemed to help a bit but it still does it.
So Here is what i just did. I started it, it popped twice and died. I started it and kept it running for about 10 minutes and rechecked the timing. It was off by 8 degrees! This surprised me a little since i just did the timing a little bit ago. So I brung it up to idle at 700rpm and disconnected the vacuum hose. I set the timing to 8 degrees base timing. Then i re adjusted the idle mixture screws and found those were a little off and now it seemed to run quite a bit more sound. I killed the engine for a sec to take it out for a test drive. I started it and let it idle for 10 secs. then i gave it a little tap on the gas and POP! another effing pop! That was the only one of the whole test drive. It ran beautifully the whole drive. Very responsive and no popping. Why still that pop right when i gave it a little gas??
