Default 350 engine 10k miles

are there any engine experts here ,I found problem with my 79 vette ,pulled cam today lobe on #5 exhaust is near gone ,#1 exhaust lifter is cupped bad ,#5 exhaust lifter has worn down so bad there's a hole in the bottom of it .#5 intake push rod went thru rocker and stuck ,would it be safe to put another cam and lifters and push rods , in this engine everything else looks good ,what would of made this happen? also it has double valve springs ,I assume because of the high lift cam ,but I would not be going back with one that big

Replace the cam and lifters, timing chain and gears, I'd also replace the springs with the ones recommended for the cam you decide on using. Check all the pushrods for being straight (roll them on a piece of glass or any known flat surface, inspect the ends for damage. Look at the rockers too- any signs of damage on either end or in the ball- toss them and get new. If you find damage on the exhaust rockers, move a broken-in rocker from the intake side and put the new one on the exhaust. GM says the intakes run a little cooler and will break-in better. But really, if you find more than a couple of bad ones, I'd think about replacing the set.

That will depend on your budget. A hydraulic roller would be a good choice but will run the cost up like sending your bride to the mall with a hi-limit credit card with no balance. A good replacement cam, hydraulic flat tappet, will keep the cost down to realistic level. And there are loads of those to pick from. Figure out what your primary use for the car is going to be, what gears you have, and what trans. Get on the phone to the cam manufacturers tech lines and give them that information- see what they recommend.

I would also check the lifter bores to make sure that a lifter can rotate within it. The cupped lifter suggests a lifter that was not rotating within the bore

My experience in these types of failures is that there's likely been bearing damage. The particulate clogs the filter, which then goes into bypass....and particulate is pumped through the engine.

You have to make your own decisions here - some folks seem to get away without tearing down an engine after a cam failure, but in my personal experience most end up with an overhaul after this happens.

If you decide not to do an overhaul, at least do 2-3 fairly rapid oil/filter changes to clean out as well as possible.
