Looks like the filter element is just glued in place. I guess when the glue gave out the filter fell down since I had it mounted vertically. The flat portion probably covered and restricted the incoming flow enough to slow down the filling of the fuel bowls.
Clearly I'm going to need something of higher quality that won't fall apart like this.
I had a similar issue with my '69 - but mine was stalling out constantly. It was a hot day and at first I thought it was vapor lock - but ruled it out. I can't tell by your photos but my filter has 2 ports on one side and 1 port on the other. I took the fuel filter off, blew it out and it was clogged. I replaced it with a "Purolater" part #F21117 and haven't had any more issues since. It didn't take it apart and the filter itself may have fallen apart - I threw it away, so I can't check it to be sure.
That's what I was thinking. I was living in Jacksonville, FL and never had this problem. Now that I am in San Diego all of a sudden this happens. By sudden I mean a couple of months.
Are there filters out there that do not have glued filtration elements inside? Do those aluminum filters with AN fittings on them seem like a better option?
I can't let this happen again. I was on a busy freeway and the car just died. It could have been much worse.
