Try Ed Hartnett in Lansdown, PA. 610-623 9381 he is the man for manual trannys, He has the correct bushings for your motor. the ones that come with the clutch kits are junk. try putting the bushing against a magnet, chances are it will stick because of the steel content. proper bushing should be all brass
Sounds like you found the smok'in gun. Never-the-less I'll share my story as someone else my read thread in the future.
My M21 Trans would NOT go the last 1/2 inch into the bell housing.
Seing no attempt of mine could persuade the trans to mate with the bell housing, I took off the bell housing and inserted the trans through the pressure plate and it slide all the way into the pilot busing with no problem. Next, I test mated the trans and bell housing on the bench. Discovered the trans was hanging up in the center of bellhousing. Someone installed one wrong bolt on the trans input shaft cover. It had a larger head and was hang up -- wouldn't clear the bell housing. Had I forced it, I would have broken a trans ear. Installed new (correct) bolts and used sand paper to cleanup over spray paint, grease, and dirt on both mating sections. Afterwards they mated easily on the bench and on the engine.
Yes. Used the alignment tool that came with the clutch kit. Is it possible to knock the disk out of alignment while trying to install the transmission?
I found out that the alignment tool you get with the kit is kind of sloppy. Borrow a pilot shaft from one of your buddies or a local garage you can line things up alot better with it. LOL
Just thought I would post a follow-up. I got the tranny back in using 1/2" longer transmission case to bellhousing bolts. I was real careful to tighten the bolts evenly. I felt a little bit of tension and then the input shaft popped right into the pilot bushing and the tranny slid right in. Not my favorite way to do it, but it worked and the car is back on the road.
