I have Dual Spals on the backside of my radiator, they lie flat to the same plane as the radiator, so the air is forced downward toward the deck, or harmonic balancer at most.....
I have what I consider poor a/c performance and lots of heat on wife's feet even though I have insulated pretty decently....
SO, question is.....would remounting the Spals to blow straight back over the front of the engine, help in any meaningful way to lower underhood temps....?? would it be noticed in the interior/cab??
engine runs warm, well it IS Florida with road temps off the assfault at ~130f but not hot, the Spals pull it down quickly .....
Check the seal around the AC box in the engine compartment. It is the black tar like stuff. Over time it gets hard and some may fall out. I had about a 1/4" X 4" gap at the bottom on mine and it was letting hot air pour in from the engine compartment.
Could it be just a Freon loss in your AC system ?
It is very important that the coolant or Freon level of an air conditioning system be checked often...
When you say poor A/C performance what are the temps coming out of your center vents? Are you still using the R12? Do you have a heater core cut off valve installed? My friend has a 71 he just overhauled the A/C system and charged it up with R12 and he is getting mid 40's duct temps and that is here in hot Texas. ASnyway when he bought his car the previous owner gave him a factory service manual with the car and for our outside temps and his low/hi pressures that duct temp is normal.
I thought about that before, I made a small experiemnt by installing a 14 in. plastic flex-lite fan to the water pump in addition to the spal fans (pushed a lot of air to the engine), I had no difference at all in terms of under-hood temps, engine coolant temp, or cabin temp. I wasn't expecting much about lowering engine and cabin temps, but I was surprised to see no difference in even the under-hood temps.
The one thing that I don't like about the position of the fans, is that they tilted to a degree that I think part of the warm air that hit the ground would be sucked again into the radiator when the car is sitting still, I'm thinking of away to check the temps of the air on both side of the radiator.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
You could mount a pair of $200 Fexalites maybe less cause I have set for sale Straight down behind the Spals, you fabricate a couple of brackets off the bottom of the rad support to hold the Flexalites vertical,
100 bananas and their yours.
The funny thing is I started writing this then I remembered I actually had the fans out in the garage, no
