Default Couple Questions

I have a '74 350 4-Speed T-Tops that was somewhat neglected by the previous owner. The car is all there, but everything is rotted, rusted, and broken. Iv started replacing pretty much the entire car part by part but had a couple questions.

When I received the car, the horn/alarm system was not working. Ive replaced the horn as well as the contacts in the steering column. The horn now works, but the alarm system still doesn't sound. Iv checked all the fuses in the system, is their anything else that I should check before I change the relay/switch itself?

The speedometer on the car is also broken. I pulled the assembly that holds the speedometer gear out and found the gear stripped. I replaced the gear, and reinstalled the assembly back into the transmissions (Of course the retaining bolt holding the little metal rectangle piece broke in half, which was a whole bucket of fun removing.) The speedometer still doesn't work. The assembly was also loose when i went to remove it. The previous owner said the car would chew the speedometer gear every time he broke the back tires loose. Is their any way to correct the loose assembly? What else can I check before pulling the dash for the speedometer cable?

The car is a 74' California car, meaning I don't have get it smogged. Iv removed all the emissions equipment minus the air tubes in the exhaust manifold. The tubes seem impossible to remove, so I was going to order a fresh set of exhaust manifolds. Before I order a set of exhaust manifolds, I was wondering if anyone knew of a set of exhaust headers that would bolt up to the existing factory exhaust without the need to cut/grind. (350, Manual, Factory A/C)

Also, does anyone have a diagram showing the the relays. Id love to know which relays are for what.

Purchase the 74 assembly instruction manual (AIM) and the GM chassis service manual. Those two volumes will answer most of your questions about your current problems and the stuff you will run up against in the future.

If you do not have an owner's manual, order a reproduction when you order the AIM and service manual. Read through the owner's manual; lots of useful inf9ormation in the owner's manual.

If you have an original owner's manual, take it out of the car and store it in a safe place. Keep the reprint in the car.

Good luck.

Thanks Mike, I'll be sure to order those this weekend. In the mean time, if anyone has any information on a set of exhaust headers that would bolt up to the factory exhaust id be greatfull.

I have never seen a header that bolts up to factory exhaust. A full length header will have a collecter that reduces from 3 inch down to 2 1/2 or 2 1/4 whatever you choose. Then a short piece of tubing will have to be fitted to the rest of the exhaust. Most any exhaust shop can do this for a small fee.

The main horn and the alarm system are not connected in any way. The alarm has it's own horn in the rear drivers side wheel housing.
