Default Harmonic Balancer Question

Unknowingly, I installed a harmonic balancer for a late 80's camaro on my Vette. Since the timing mark on those is much farther back on the balancer, I need to know the distance between where that mark is, and where it should be. Anybody know the distance?

TIA,

Pull the valve covers, and approximate TDC for the #1 cyl. Take some timing tape and wrap it around. This will allow you to time the engine pretty well. It won't be as exact as if you took a degree wheel to it, but you should be close. You can also pull the spark plug hole for #1, and place your finger over the hole. Feel as the cylinder comes up the bore and then goes back down. Again, you can approximate TDC. But make sure it's for the compression stroke (watch the valvetrain).

I hope this helps.

Why didn't I think of that! That's just like an engineer. When we see hoofprints we look for zebras instead of horses.

When you said it was from a late 80's engine, depending on the year, they were external balance and unless modified our C3's are internal balance. Just something to think about.
