Looks like I am scoring a 1973 "Vette BBC complete from carb to Ex. Manifolds, Bone stock w factory chrome VC's. A running non smoker w a bad cam. Now I want an outward stock look, but more Umph from it so I am wondering about a good cam choice for a stock 454 w the stock manifolds (probably go to headers and/or side exaust later) and the "flat" cast iron intake. a slight "lope is ok as long as a "loose" tq. converter is not needed. I got a 73 455 Buick 800 CFM Qjet in great shape w my 75 so I plan on using that. Nice thing about Qjets is that they will not open more than the motor needs but more is avail. if needed w the 800 carb.
With those conditions its pretty much street driving only. All be it a bit on the HP side-Low and mid range. If I want true HP I'd still put in my 596 dynoed HP 461 BBC I had planned on, But I do not want the hassle and additional expense required w that kind of power in a street driven car. At least not this one. One thing tends to lead to another in that situation- broken driveline parts especially.
That engine actually has about 7.7 to almost 8.0 compression in real measured numbers...so anything to increase cylinder pressure is a good thing.
You can't go too high on duration...lift with the stock rockers will be happiest under .550" lift (though you can go more)...but I'm thinking they have a few years on them.
That Voodoo cam is not a bad one at all....it's got a tighter lobe separation so it will help things.
The old Comp 268H series work well in these applications. Old school,,,but are simple and always work well. They are less aggressive than the Voodoo's..but designed by the same fellow.
