Aluminum flywheel for externally balanced stroker BB
The stroker crank in my 496 is sold as internally balanced but it has a throw weight on the end of the crank outside the block. Even though the weight appears a little recessed from the end of the crank, the engine dyno operator said I should look for a flywheel that's recessed a little on the back side just to be safe, he's had interference problems with other "externally balanced internally balanced" cranks before.
I want an aluminum flywheel but none of the websites show a picture of the backside. Anyone know of an aluminum flywheel that has "room" on the backside for counterweight clearance?
Got any pics? They are either internal or external. The flywheels will physically bolt to either one...just won't be balanced properly. Shouldn't be any issues with rear side clearance.
Balancer is neutral balanced ATI and the crank is an Eagle forged stroker that's sold as internally balanced. On the engine dyno, we used an internally balanced steel flywheel that was clearanced on the block side because the shop owner had experience with these kinds of "internally balanced" cranks before.
There is a slight recess from the end of the crank to the weighted throw but I am taking the advice of someone experienced in these matters and looking for an aluminum flywheel that has some room on the block side.
Any suggestions except to order a quality aluminum flywheel and hope for the best?
I don't have any pics...but we just used a Fidanza aluminum wheel and it was pretty scalloped out on the backside. Usually the flange is out from main part of wheel...so I think you'll be fine.
Not to hi-jack the thread, but is that crank is really internally balanced? .. if it has that much of a counter weight "outside" the block, then they can't be called "internally balanced", can they?
It's internally balanced because it doesn't require an externally balanced 454 flywheel. If they called it externally balanced and someone put an externally balanced 454 flywheel on it, there would be problems.
