Default Ignition Module

I just went down to start my 77 L82 to drive home from work and it is completely dead (turns over but won't start). I am pretty sure it is the ignition module AGAIN. This part has failed 4 or 5 times in this cars 54,000 mile life. I assume that it has the same ignition system that was used on other GM cars of that era and I am not aware that it is a particularly troublesome system. Any ideas on why my car is so hard on these things????

About the only things an electronic module don't like are heat and to much voltage. Check also for a good ground.

I think when they get old its best to replace the pickup coil and module. Be sure to put the silicone grease under the module to help with heat transfer.

I've been through a couple. Always carry a spare, and yes, put the grease under it.

I've always heard it is good to match the module and the coil to the same brand. I keep an extra of each behind the seat.

Thanks for the thoughts. I always put in the silicone grease and I always carry a spare module (just not all the tools I need to change it out wearing a suit and tie). I will try changing the coil too.

Are you putting the correct silicone grease on the backplate?

Some time ago in my 82 I bought a DUI coil and module. Module lasted about 3 years. Replaced it with the original module and it is still running fine. That is about 28 years, minus the 3 or so on the DUI.
