I just went down to start my 77 L82 to drive home from work and it is completely dead (turns over but won't start). I am pretty sure it is the ignition module AGAIN. This part has failed 4 or 5 times in this cars 54,000 mile life. I assume that it has the same ignition system that was used on other GM cars of that era and I am not aware that it is a particularly troublesome system. Any ideas on why my car is so hard on these things????
I think when they get old its best to replace the pickup coil and module. Be sure to put the silicone grease under the module to help with heat transfer.

I know when i had issues with my truck, the problem kept coming up until I did this...
Thanks for the thoughts. I always put in the silicone grease and I always carry a spare module (just not all the tools I need to change it out wearing a suit and tie). I will try changing the coil too.

Are you putting the correct silicone grease on the backplate?
Some time ago in my 82 I bought a DUI coil and module. Module lasted about 3 years. Replaced it with the original module and it is still running fine. That is about 28 years, minus the 3 or so on the DUI.
