I have a new to me 1968 with a 355 motor, 4 speed 4.11 rear, dart 2 heads, hooker side pipes, roller rockers, and a moderate cam(I dont know the specs but it idles with a moderate lope). I just got this car so I am playing the "why did the last owner do xxxx game. The car has MSD 6AL ignition box but an old Accel distributor model 30100T. The ditributor does not have any vaccum advance.....why would you want to eliminate that???

Also, what is a good disributor (MSD something?) that is pointless that would work good with the 6AL and the mechanical tach drive?

Eliminating the vacuum advance is probably costing you some fuel mileage nothing else. Mallory and MSD make great distributors but, expect to pay over $300 for one. The Chinese made HEI tach drive can be connected to your MSD, prices are cheap but, don't know much about quality on these.

The previous owner probably has the timing locked out, which gives you a better throttle response off idle with a big cam.. It wil also help smooth out your idle some.. Big cams like alot of initial advance... He may have also removed the advance springs in the distributor too... I have done the same thing to my 68 but it does require an ignition cut-off switch so it will crank over when its warm.. For having a big cam, my car has incredable throttle response right off idle when I mash the pedal (no foot braking required off the line )

sounds like the previous owner knew how to tune an engine and also knew what he was doing....why change a good thing.... just to go along with the crowd who firmly believe in a vacuum can??.....
